Commonhold

A company of everyday apps

Apps owned by the people who use them.

Commonhold builds the apps you rely on every day, and most of Commonhold belongs to the people using them. When the owners are the users, you decide what happens to your data.

What we believe

Software should answer to the people who live with it.

Owners hold the majority

Anyone who uses our apps can become an owner, and together owners hold most of Commonhold. The people who decide what the apps become are the people who use them.

Your data is yours to decide on

We don't sell your data or show you ads without your permission. As an owner, you decide how your own data and usage are used. Our apps keep only what they need to work, and you can download or delete everything about you at any time.

No trackers riding along

We don't use third-party analytics. To learn what's working we count a few anonymous events ourselves, with no user ID, device ID or free text.

Code you can read

Our apps are source-available. Anyone can read how they work, and run or change them for personal use.

Our apps

Starting with the family.

Kin

Family location sharing

See your family on a map and get a heads-up when someone arrives at or leaves home, school or work, without anyone selling where you've been.

  • A live family map. It checks in every 15 seconds while someone drives and every minute while they walk, then slows down to save battery.
  • Arrivals and departures. Save the places that matter, and Kin lets the circle know when someone gets there or heads out.
  • No location history. Kin keeps only each person's latest location. Arrivals and departures are cleared after 30 days.
  • Pause any time. Pausing hides you from your circle straight away, and nothing is recorded while you're paused.
  • Temporary circles. Share with friends for a trip or a weekend, and sharing stops on the end date everyone agreed to.

Kin is in testing now and coming to iPhone first, with Android and the web to follow.

More on the way. Each new Commonhold app shares one account and one membership, under the same rules: owners decide, and your data stays yours.

Ownership

The more of us use it, the more of it is ours.

Most companies sell shares to investors. Commonhold sets most of itself aside for the people who actually use its apps, and their membership is what pays to keep the apps running.

  1. Use the apps

Sign in to any Commonhold app with one account. Kin is the first.

  2. Become an owner

Pay once for a lifetime membership, or pay yearly. Owners together hold at least 51% of Commonhold from day one, with one member, one vote.

  3. Have a say

Owners help decide what gets built next and how their data is treated.

Membership keeps the lights on

Owner fees pay for the servers, support and development that keep every app running, instead of ads or selling data.

Usage at cost

A few things cost real money to run, like storing photos and files. Where an app has to charge for that, we aim to charge what it costs us and no more.

Commonhold is being formed as a member-owned cooperative. Owners start with 51% of the votes and profits, and that rises to 60% and then 90% automatically as yearly revenue grows. The founder trust holds the rest, and the founder's startup money is a loan, not extra ownership. We'll publish the full terms before anyone is asked to join.
